THE RUSSIAN WINTER '98 SCHOOL

This school was organized in cooperation with Istituto Italiano per gli Studi Filosofoci (Naples), and took place in Pereslavl-Zalessky in January 26 - February 5, 1998. Altogether, 25 students took part from Russia and Community of Independent States (CIS) also known as former Soviet Union. They came from Central Russia towns of Voronezh (7 students), St.-Petersburg (4), Nizhny Novgorod (1), Moscow (4), Yaroslavl (1) and Pereslavl-Zalessky (1) and also from Ukraine (Donetsk, 4) and Belorussia (Grodno, 1).

There were two introductory courses during the present school:
1. Differential calculus in commutative rings by prof. J.S. Krasil'scshik
(Lecture notes of the course: The Diffiety Inst. Preprint Series, DIPS 1/99).

2. Analysis on manifolds by prof. A.M. Vinogradov.
These courses were organized as follows. Two lectures were given in the morning; after 3 hours lunch break seminars an consultations were held, led by the Diffiety Institute members. The relevant literature was distributed freely (for students).

Besides the main program, the excursion to the Institute of Program Resources computer center was organized. There a lecture on the Internet resources for mathematicians was given by Dr. S. M. Abramov. Another lecture by Dr. S. V. Znamensky was given on the subject of TeX.

The cultural program included two local sightseeing excursions. The first one was devoted to ancient part of Pereslavl-Zalessky with its snow covered cathedrals, river and lake. The second excursion was to a museum in old monastery.
